American Literature - Mini-course
A shortened version of high school American Lit
In this abbreviated version of LessonsWithoutLectures’ American Literature course, the timeline is shortened but the content and take-away are comparable to that of a full course.
Veteran-homeschool moderators will guide students in exploring so much more than just literature! While delving into the depths of specially chosen books, participants are encouraged to engage in the lost art of exchanging ideas through civil discourse - a skill that is sorely lacking in today’s society.
This course is currently in Beta testing and limited to 15 students. Future courses will contain more subject matter and will be priced accordingly. Class begins on Tuesday, October 1. The final class day is Monday, November 18.
At the start of each book, students will listen to a short lesson and receive instruction on specifics about the upcoming material. In the weeks following, discussion questions will be posted, and each student will add their answers in the private forum for that lesson. At the end of the book, all students will participate in a Zoom conference led by the teacher/moderator.
Please note: We do not assign final grades. A certificate of completion will be provided to all students who have participated in the forums and Zoom conferences.
Additional (and optional) writing assignments may be presented and can be completed at the parent's discretion. Parents are encouraged to use their own grading rubric to assign a final grade.
A staunch believer in the power of words, Candy has incorporated literature-based discussion in her homeschool program for more than 20 years. She has a strong desire to facilitate healthy, engaging conversation that leads to deeper thinking and better doing. Using this method, among others, Candy has successfully graduated 3 of her 4 children who are now making a positive difference in the world. She’s excited to begin helping other families do the same!
